In my country, when a baby is born,if the baby is a girl, their parents want the baby to have a body piercing such as earing piercing. When the baby grows up and she gets married, she has an earing piercing by their husband's parents, and they give her earrings, ring, and necklace .Before 2000, 35 percent of Vietnamese ages 18 to 50 have at least one body piercing. After 2000, 25 percent of Vietnamese have at least one body piercing.
It is so interesting that it is opposite of the US in so many ways; we don't do this to babies, and often it is seen as a sign of growing up/defining ourselves as "adults" -- and the number is increasing, not decreasing.
